The island platform 2/3 at Maidenhead station was suffering from overcrowding with the previous layout providing just one staircase that leads passengers away from the platform level down to the subway tunnel to exit the station.

McRail RMC Constructions was appointed by Morgan Sindall to undertake the construction of a second staircase to the island platform 2/3 from the platform level down to the subway level. The new staircase was positioned in the location of the previous lift to platform 2/3 in the luggage subway. The previous lift to platform 2/3 was removed and replaced with a new lift. The new lift was installed in the cross-passage corridor between the two existing subways.
